Talk about a bad election result

Despite my own contributions to the Conservative campaign in the last Canadian election, my local candidate in Vancouver Quadra went down to defeat against his Liberal incumbent opponent – sadly, by a wide margin (though we managed to close the gap a bit from last time, at least).

It doesn’t matter too much nationally, since one more seat wouldn’t turn a fragile Conservative minority into a solid majority.

But in the days since the election, I’ve heard so many offhand disparaging comments about Stephen Harper.

The one that really riles me is people’s complaints that a vote for the Conservatives is really a vote for religious fanatics.

Hamas, an internationally-condemned Islamic fundamentalist terrorist group, won a clear majority in the West Bank and Gaza Strip on Thursday (as reported by RAVI NESSMAN, Associated Press Writer). Hamas made a name for itself by blowing up civilians in nightclubs and restaurants in gory suicide bombings as part of its relentless drive to exterminate Israel.

When people talk about religious extremism in Canada, they ought to keep things in perspective.
