What a wonderful world

Looking out on the water from English Bay in Vancouver, the world is a peaceful place.

The clouds part so that the sun shines down on the open water where recreational boaters are getting an early start on the weekend. In the distance, snow-topped mountains fade into the blue of the water and the sky. The only sound that disturbs the serenity is the reassuring whirring of bicycle wheels and roller blades as the beautiful people cruise along the seawall.

English Bay is not truly open water - Vancouver Island is somewhere out there beyond the horizon. But beyond that, the Pacific Ocean looms ahead like the vastness of outer space.

The latest scare out of London reminds us that no country is entirely safe these days (as if we needed a reminder). Still, on days like today, with the old trees of Stanley Park at my back and the symbol of civilization that is the trendy cafe a short walk away, it's easy to put those bad thoughts out of your mind for a little while.

Peaceful leisure is the privelege of a peaceable kingdom.
