Here's a peace plan that hasn't been tried

While Canadians debate whether our government was too hasty in taking sides on the latest Middle East conflict, other national leaders closer to the action are just blurting out whatever they feel like - and I suspect they're not facing bad news in the polls as a result.

Breaking news: The solution to the Middle East crisis is to destroy Israel.

That's Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's solution ( as reported by the Associated Press here).

Give the man a Nobel Peace Prize. The beauty of the plan, of course, is its simplicity. Kill (or deport at gunpoint) the entire population of a UN member state and there will be nothing left to fight over. It's peace by default.

And why stop at the Middle East? There's plenty of conflicts around the globe that would be easy enough to fix with this method. Just dump every single Taiwanese citizen into the Pacific and China would have no reason left to aim 14,000 missiles at the island.

North and South Korea? Well, since their armed forces sort of balance each other out, I guess you could flip a coin. Heads, you win, tails, you eat cyanide-laced kimchee.

Then there are those pesky Cubans. Technically, the USA isn't actually at war with Cuba, but those touchy Gringos sure do find the island's communist regime irritable. Just have every single Cuban walk the plank into shark-infested waters. Problem solved, right there.

Of course, one national leader already came up with this solution over sixty years ago, so really, the peace prize ought to go to him posthumously. He even had a name for his plan that pretty much said it all - The Final Solution.

Maybe President Ahmadinejad will have the good manners to at least mention the Fuhrer by name as he accepts the prize. But surely we would all forgive a man so devoted to the cause of peace should be found lacking in the finer points of etiquette.
